Improving the Digital Agenda Assembly
We’ve just had an exciting Digital Agenda Assembly, with great participation online and offline (http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/digital-agenda/daa/index_en.htm) and now it will be very useful to receive your feedback on how to improve this kind of event in future, make it more relevant and engaging. This forum aims at gathering comments and suggestions on the Digital Assembly, as a complement to feedback collected through individual assessment forms.
In particular your feedback is sought on:
- EVENT PREPARATION (programme, online interaction, registrations, other): feedback on DAA 2011 and recommendations for the future
- EVENT ITSELF (plenary and workshop sessions, networking and side activities, other): feedback on DAA 2011 and recommendations for the future
- FOLLOW-UP to the event (exploitation of shared information, elaboration of proposals and commitments made, link to future policy work around the digital agenda for Europe, other): recommendations for the future
Please post suggestions for improvement, comment and rate other people suggestions.

Begin the DAA online in January and culminate in a June meeting
The DAA could begin online in January, utilising social networking and other tools. This would help to refine the focus of the workshops at the June meeting, making them more action oriented. It would also increase the value of the physical networking experience when we come together in June.

Publish all presentations online
Some workshop have published their presentations (eg #daa11psi) but others (eg #daa11egov) have not. Presentations should be put onto a platform which allows comment and discussion.

Networking/ Contacts exchange and database between participants
Create an opportunity for all of the interested participants to exchange contacts: social media tool/'networking booth or else, which will be further distributed to all who wants to reach people from his/her field of work. This will give the possibility for the participants to find like-minded partners for future projects and exchange ideas.

Ask the panelist specific views on what EU needs to do
The panel season was individual presentations but did not have any connecting view point flowing through the session. It would have helped if the panel session asked what the panelist would o to solve the cloud computing challenge rather than just provide some general slides. For example , ther needs to be. EU cloud computing CIO appointed ? There needs to be a set of EU joint portal service sites setup for service interchange ? Etc

Introduce each workshop via a discussion paper
Each workshop should be introduced by a short discussion paper identifying the key issues to be discussed and the expected outcome. In this way more relevant people would come, and more relevant and purposeful discussion will be held

More audience interaction
Far too much being talked at when we need to debate. I know it's the standard EU format, but do we really always have to have the current and next Presidencies and the CoR and the ECSC and and and. I mean really, who ever heard of workshops (workshops?!) with 8 or 9 speakers??? How's about half a day run as an unconference.

Mentoring of ICT startups
Utilize the combination of experience and entrepreneurship present, to have entrepreneur-camps during the assembly; using the experienced participants as mentors for the potential start-ups. Thus, we would get both more business started as well as more interaction and learning shared.

Debategraph
While this didn't fulfill its potential it was a useful addition to the plenary sessions and thought should be given to how this can be enhanced. I have followed up this tool and it has much to offer in terms of linking ideas and showing the development of the arguments. In this instance it was too abstract, perhaps it would be better placed as an interactive tool in the networking areas to support the plenary sessions. I would add my support for more use of the Twitter stream to give immediate feedback. I think we should keep tools like debategraph…

Improve food selection, specially for people with special dietary requirements
There was no food available for people with special dietary requirements, despite asking for it in advance. I know what I'm talking about because I was diagnosed with celiac disease and can only eat gluten-free food. On the first lunch some gluten-free and vegetarian food was apparently available but was not enough (I couldn't eat anything). Then for dinner and lunch on day 2 was not available at all. I asked the two catering managers and they confirmed it was not cooked by the chef. I complaint. Please, avoid this issue next time.
Additionally, I think that many people would…11 votes -
Useless USB and gifts
It does not make sense to hand out USB devices when there is no content (e.g. presentations) found. At a DAA you assume that participants do not need paper to take their notes unless they ask for it. Do not provide umbrellas, chose a better location. All these giveaways are mere waste.

More power sockets at the venue
For an event with so many digital people there were very few power sockets available. There was a huddle of us at the back of the plenary using the few sockets there, but late-comers were disappointed and it was so far back it was difficult to follow the proceedings. With my 2 hour laptop battery life I came to share the Belgian Minister's iPad2 envy ......
The 'Internet areas' outside the conference rooms also had insufficient power sockets

Add an open source workshop
It does make littel sense to discuss the European market future in the digital field without considering open source. In fact many players on the floor mentioned it but there was no dedicated workshop. It looks like a real bias on behalf of the Commission to exclude open source. That may be acceptable in the Brussels space ship but not for Europeans, even at the United Nations IGF they discussed open source.

Identify participants more clearly: Entrepreneur, Policy-Maker or Lobbyist.
The one thing I really enjoyed at DAA was the interaction with other entrepreneurs facing similar problems in the digital single market, and the input we developed from there for policy-makers. What I did not enjoy was being part of a session which was clearly full of corporate lobbyists seeking to protect their existing business. It would help to clearly identify delegates for example by different colours for example for the lanyards.

DAA video contribution - Improve use of social media and communication
The DAA video contest was a good idea - unfortunately, it had some shortcomings in the execution:
- Due date and deadlines have been changed several times in advance. This created dissatisfaction among the participants, since they usually work toward a deadline. Thats the fun about a "competition".
- There was no contact person for questions, e.g. when and how the movies will be shown. The responsible person for the YouTube channel could give no information.
- The "winners" were not notified (e.g. by email) and were unfortunately not made public. Accordingly, a participant did not know if his video…

Have actual rooms
Choose a venue that has actual rooms available for the workshops, instead of (very small) areas separated from each other by curtains (!) resulting in interference from other workshops and people in the back not hearing the speakers, because the sound couldn't be too loud.

Have a pre-assembly 'unconference'
Unconferences are open to anyone, have the agenda set on the day by the participants, have no budget, are usually held on the weekend, and therefore attract people who want to get things done/fix problems rather than because it's their job. I've had fantastic experiences with them in the UK

Unconference / barcamp
Experiment with new forms of conferences and events which enable more ad hoc interaction
